Microsoft’s Xbox division is reportedly undergoing one of its most significant restructurings in recent years as the company reviews its long-term gaming strategy. According to multiple reports, Ninja Theory, the acclaimed UK-based studio behind the popular Hellblade franchise, may be shut down as part of the overhaul. Employees were reportedly informed during an internal meeting, although hopes remain that a potential buyer could acquire the studio and continue its operations.
The restructuring extends beyond Ninja Theory, with reports suggesting that other Xbox-owned studios, including Compulsion Games and Double Fine, are exploring options to become independent entities. The changes follow recent comments from Xbox leadership regarding the need for a strategic reset amid rising development costs, hardware expenses, and challenging market conditions. Industry observers believe the move signals a major shift in Microsoft’s gaming business as the company focuses on long-term sustainability and operational efficiency.
