The Democratic Party's victory in the November 3, 2026, US midterm elections has become a topic of discussion among Congress leaders in India. Democrats have secured control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, dealing a major political setback to President Donald Trump and the Republican Party. The outcome has encouraged some Congress leaders, who believe that political change is possible in India as well. Their message has been summed up in the phrase, "Yes, We Can Too."
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh described the US election results as a verdict against Trump. He also criticised the Centre's proposed 'One Nation, One Election' policy, arguing that holding Lok Sabha and Assembly elections simultaneously could reduce opportunities to hold governments accountable between elections. Congress spokesperson Dr Shama Mohamed also expressed optimism, saying that a similar political change could happen in India. In a post on X, she said voters would respond electorally to governments that weaken democratic institutions or misrepresent the country's economic situation. She added that victories once considered impossible could become achievable with public support.
