Sanmarg Private Limited, the publisher of the prominent Hindi daily Sanmarg, has acquired a 100% stake in Tehelka.com Private Limited, taking full ownership of the Tehelka media organisation. The Sanmarg Group announced that the acquisition was completed in October 2026. With this move, the Kolkata-based group is expanding its presence into magazine publishing and digital media. It plans to invest further in Tehelka and convert its fortnightly magazine into a weekly publication, while continuing to publish it in both print and digital formats.
The group acquired the shares from an investor consortium that had taken over Tehelka in 2017. Sanmarg also announced the appointment of senior journalist Arvind Chaturvedi as Tehelka's new editor-in-chief. The company clarified that former editor Tarun Tejpal, who stepped down following sexual harassment allegations, has no association with the current organisation or its operations. Under the acquisition agreement, Anant Media Private Limited, the former owner, will remain responsible for earlier litigation and other commitments relating to Tehelka. The group has also assured lifetime subscribers that they will continue receiving both print and digital editions. Sanmarg said its aim is to promote meaningful and serious journalism while complying with government regulations.
