Google appears to be testing a new feature for its Gemini AI assistant that could make voice interactions more natural and uninterrupted. According to a recent report, the company is exploring a “Mic Lock” option that lets users hold or lock the microphone while speaking, similar to WhatsApp’s voice note feature.Currently, Gemini often stops listening if the user pauses while talking—unless they’re using Gemini Live. The new Mic Lock feature aims to fix that by allowing users to keep the mic active until they manually stop it.The discovery came from an APK teardown of the Google app (version 16.42.61) by Android Authority, which revealed code references to this upcoming tool. Screenshots show that when a user long-presses the mic icon in Gemini’s chat box, it transforms into a stop button—letting them speak freely and tap “stop” when done.
In addition, Google seems to be redesigning Gemini’s interface. The input box reportedly expands as users start typing, making it feel more fluid and responsive. While Google hasn’t officially confirmed when or if this feature will roll out widely, it’s clear the company is working to make Gemini more conversational and user-friendly. If released, the Mic Lock feature could help users give longer, more detailed commands without interruptions.
