Google is reportedly testing a new version of its AI Mode that runs directly inside the Chrome browser, without needing to open the Google Search page. The new interface, spotted in the latest Chrome Canary build, opens through an internal Chrome address, confirming it is not powered by Search. Users can type questions, upload files or images, and receive answers within the same browser window.
According to Windows Report, the updated AI Mode now appears as a “Contextual Tasks” page. It allows users to upload PDFs or images, summarise documents, and analyse content directly. The tool can also summarise open tabs without creating new pages, similar to Perplexity’s Comet browser and ChatGPT Atlas. The feature is currently experimental and not available to beta testers.
The report also notes that this version supports image generation through Nano Banana or Nano Banana Pro for users with Google AI Pro/Ultra subscriptions. Testers were able to generate images inside the internal page without opening Search. Some parts of the interface still show placeholder text and certain features remain unstable, likely because the tool is still under development.
