Google has introduced a long-awaited feature that allows users to change their Gmail address without losing their data. Eligible users can access this option through their account settings under “Personal info > Email”. Once the new @gmail.com address is selected and confirmed, the old address becomes an alias. All emails, photos, and files remain intact, and both the old and new email IDs will continue to receive messages in the same inbox.
However, Google has placed certain restrictions to prevent misuse. Users can change their Gmail address only up to three times in their lifetime, with a mandatory 12 month gap between changes. Some services like Chromebooks or third-party apps may require manual updates after switching. The feature is rolling out gradually and may not be available to all users yet, especially for work or school accounts that need admin approval.
