Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney shared a controversial opinion regarding AI labels in video games. He stated that AI tags on games listed in marketplaces are unnecessary because in the near future, almost all game production processes will involve AI in some form.
Sweeney explained on X (formerly Twitter) that AI labels make more sense in contexts like art exhibits for authorship disclosure or digital content licensing platforms, where buyers need to know about rights. He argued that for video games, AI is expected to be a standard tool, and tagging every game as “AI-made” would be redundant.
This comment comes at a time when the gaming industry is divided on AI usage. Some developers are hesitant to incorporate AI in games, fearing it may replace human creativity, while others see benefits in AI-generated art, 3D models, and animations.
For example, Steam and other digital marketplaces have begun using “Made with AI” labels as a disclosure for digital content. Currently, there are over a thousand games on Steam that utilize AI in some capacity. Meanwhile, games like Arc Raiders use AI-generated text-to-speech voices trained on real actors, while the rest of the game is developed by human developers using industry-standard automation tools.
The debate is particularly heated for text-heavy RPGs and tell-tale games, where low-effort AI-generated content could quickly flood the marketplace. Sweeney emphasized that AI should assist humans, not replace them, preserving the creativity and soul of the games.
