Anthropic Weighs New AI Model as OpenAI Gains Enterprise Momentum

Anthropic is reportedly considering the release of a new AI model as it faces growing competitive pressure from OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra. According to people familiar with the matter cited by Reuters, the discussions come as Astra gains traction among businesses and developers. Anthropic is also evaluating the safety aspects of its next model, while considering how much to invest in new releases and how to strengthen profitability ahead of a potential initial public offering.

The developments come shortly after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for the AI industry to slow the pace at which increasingly capable models are developed, citing safety concerns. OpenAI launched GPT-6 Astra on September 3 and has highlighted improvements in areas including computer use, software engineering, cybersecurity and professional work. Reuters reported that Astra accounted for about 13% of enterprise AI spending tracked by Ramp, compared with about 8% for Anthropic’s Claude Fable. At the same time, investors continue to watch the broader competition from open-source and open-weight AI models, which could put additional pressure on the economics of commercial AI providers.
