A dramatic moment unfolded during the Argentina vs Egypt clash when Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan made an ‘X’ gesture towards referee François Letexier after Argentina scored a late winner through Enzo Fernández. The referee immediately showed Hassan a yellow card. Under FIFA regulations, the ‘X’ signal is officially used to report racist abuse during a match, making the gesture a major talking point.
However, reports later clarified that Hassan was not reporting racism but was instead protesting the referee’s decisions. The Egypt coach alleged that his side was denied a foul on Mohamed Salah, had a legitimate goal ruled out after VAR intervention, and witnessed several controversial decisions. Despite trailing 2-0, Lionel Messi’s Argentina produced a sensational comeback to win 3-2 and book their place in the quarter-finals.
