Air Marshal has expressed strong dissatisfaction over the performance of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), particularly amid growing strategic challenges along India’s borders. He criticised the delay in the delivery of Tejas Mk-1A fighter aircraft, citing issues related to the supply of GE F404 engines from the United States and difficulties in integrating components. He said HAL has failed to meet committed delivery timelines and argued that the urgency faced by the Indian Air Force is not reflected adequately in the pace of production.
Concerns have also grown over repeated delays in the first flight of the Tejas Mk-2, which has now reportedly been pushed to mid-2027. The Air Marshal suggested that India should not rely solely on long-term indigenous development and should explore international partnerships, including programmes such as FCAS and GCAP for next-generation fighter aircraft. Meanwhile, HAL’s exclusion from the AMCA stealth fighter programme, with private-sector companies gaining preference, has added to the debate over India’s defence manufacturing strategy. Experts believe India needs to accelerate the development and integration of fifth- and sixth-generation technologies to avoid future capability gaps.
