A major development has emerged in the Tamil film industry, with the Tamil Film Producers Council deciding to halt the release of new Tamil films from September 1. The decision also includes a suspension of film shoots and post-production activities. The ongoing dispute over the theatrical-to-OTT release window is reportedly at the centre of the latest crisis. The development could affect upcoming film productions, release schedules and the overall flow of new Tamil movies into theatres.
Theatre owners and distributors are demanding that films remain in theatres for at least eight weeks after their theatrical release before being made available on OTT platforms. The disagreement over the theatrical-to-OTT window has reportedly led to the producers’ council taking this step. If the issue is not resolved soon, the standoff could further affect shooting schedules, theatrical releases and OTT plans across the Tamil film industry.
