Teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi is all set to captain the Bihar senior team for the first time. He has been named captain for the first two matches of the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Sooraj Kashyap will be the vice-captain. On Friday, the Bihar Cricket Association (BCA) announced a 17-member squad.
Vaibhav was given the captaincy for only two matches as he was supposed to join the India A team. He will play in the 50-over Men's Rising Stars Asia Cup in Doha, Qatar from November 19 to 29.
BCA President Harsh Vardhan said that this responsibility will help Vaibhav grow as a player. "Vaibhav has already shown immense talent, confidence and maturity at a young age. This responsibility will give him another chance to grow as a cricketer and a leader. We hope that under Vaibhav's leadership, the team will perform with discipline, competitiveness and effectiveness," he said.
Vaibhav, who scored 175 runs in the final of the 2026 U-19 World Cup to win the trophy for India, was the player of the tournament. He was the top scorer for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2026 with 776 runs at a strike rate of 237.30. He made his T20I debut against England in Manchester in July and became the youngest international cricketer for India. In the third T20I against New Zealand, he added 118 runs without losing a wicket in the first six overs with Abhishek Sharma. This is the highest powerplay score in men's T20Is. Vaibhav scored 45 off 19 balls and Abhishek scored 113 runs off 38 balls. In all 10 T20Is, Vaibhav has scored 295 runs at a strike rate of 185.53, including 2 half-centuries.
The team was finalised by the selection committee after a review of the trials and previous performances held from November 4 to 6. Mangal Mahur and pacer Shakib Hussain have been selected on fitness criteria. Their fitness will be assessed after the first two matches. A total of 16 standby players have also been announced. Bihar will take on Saurashtra on November 14 and Railways in Indore on November 16.
