Films based on the epic Ramayana have always generated considerable interest among audiences, with filmmakers presenting the timeless story in their own distinctive styles. In recent years, two big-budget adaptations have drawn attention: Prabhas-starrer Adipurush, directed by Om Raut and released in 2023, and Ramayana, featuring Ranbir Kapoor in the lead role and directed by Nitesh Tiwari. While Adipurush opened to strong expectations, it faced criticism over Ravana’s portrayal and visual effects following the release of its teaser. Despite a few changes to the trailer and positive responses to Prabhas’s performance and the songs, the film received mixed reviews after its release and failed to achieve the expected success.
On the other hand, Ramayana, produced by Namit Malhotra on a massive budget, generated significant buzz ahead of its release, particularly for its visual effects developed with the support of international studios. The film reportedly registered a strong opening on November 5, with trade reports suggesting that its Hindi version earned more on day one than Adipurush. Its battle sequences, character designs and graphics have also attracted attention. However, comparing the two films requires consideration of factors such as release periods, ticket prices, market conditions and audience response across languages. Ultimately, a film’s success depends not only on its opening-day collections but also on its storytelling, performances, technical quality and overall audience reception.
