Senegal scripted history in the FIFA World Cup by becoming the first African team to score five goals in a single match of the tournament. In a must-win Group ‘I’ clash held in Toronto, Senegal delivered a dominant performance against Iraq, securing a comprehensive 5-0 victory. With this emphatic win, Senegal finished third in the group standings and sealed a place in the knockout stage, joining France and Norway, who had already qualified as the top two teams. Iraq, meanwhile, were eliminated from the tournament.
Senegal asserted dominance right from the start, with Habib Diarra opening the scoring in the 4th minute. After a brief defensive phase from both sides, substitute Ismaila Sarr doubled the lead in the 56th minute. Pape Gueye then struck twice in quick succession in the 59th and 71st minutes, putting the game beyond Iraq’s reach. Iliman Ndiaye capped off the performance with a goal in the 82nd minute, completing a memorable 5-0 rout and underlining Senegal’s attacking prowess.
