Rishabh Pant failed to convert a promising start into a substantial score in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. The wicketkeeper-batter scored 39 runs off 62 balls before being dismissed while attempting an aggressive shot against debutant spinner Keshara Nuwantha. Pant’s dismissal once again drew attention to his attacking approach, with former India batter Mohammad Kaif questioning whether the situation demanded such aggression.
Kaif acknowledged that attacking cricket is an important part of Pant’s game but stressed that shot selection should depend on the match situation. He pointed out that Pant had already attempted to advance down the pitch several times without success after the new ball was introduced. According to Kaif, Pant could have shown greater patience for the first few overs and played more controlled shots. He said Pant appeared to have overlooked basic cricketing logic and advised him to exercise greater judgment while selecting attacking strokes.
