India clinched the five-match T20I series against New Zealand 3-2, but the victory came alongside an unwanted record for captain Shreyas Iyer. Under his leadership, India has suffered 10 T20I defeats in just five months. The team has played 26 matches under Iyer in 2026, securing 14 wins, losing 10 and seeing two matches end without a result. According to the report, Iyer has become the first Indian captain to suffer 10 T20I defeats in a calendar year. Rohit Sharma previously held the unwanted record, with India losing eight of the 29 T20Is played under his captaincy in 2022. In comparison, India lost only nine of its 68 T20I matches between September 2023 and May 2026.
India started the New Zealand series strongly, winning the first three matches to seal the series before the hosts bounced back in the final two games. New Zealand secured a big win in the fourth T20I in Auckland before defeating India by seven wickets in the final match in Hamilton. After India posted 192 runs, Tim Seifert and Glenn Phillips guided New Zealand to victory with impressive batting performances. Despite the series win, Iyer acknowledged that the team needs to improve its bowling and fielding. He also said the final two matches provided an opportunity to experiment and test the squad. While the series triumph remains a positive result, the defeats in recent months have raised questions about India's consistency and performance under his captaincy.
