Hockey Jersey Sparks Controversy

Ahead of the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup, the Indian hockey team's decision to replace its iconic blue jersey with a saffron one has sparked widespread debate. The move drew criticism from fans and former players, who questioned the need to alter the team's long-standing visual identity and heritage.

Responding to the controversy, Hockey India said the decision was based solely on technical considerations. With blue synthetic turfs now common in international hockey, players wearing blue jerseys were facing visibility issues during matches. The governing body said saffron, a colour featured in the Indian national flag, was chosen as an alternative. It also noted that India had previously used yellow jerseys in 2014 and sky-blue jerseys in 2018. Former captain Viren Rasquinha clarified that his concerns were about preserving the team's identity rather than politics.
