Gambhir-Gill vs Laxman Over Washington Sundar: What Happened?

Team India, fresh from a 3-0 T20I series sweep against Afghanistan, is set to face the West Indies in a packed white-ball schedule. India will play three ODIs and five T20Is against the West Indies from September 27 to October 17. Shubman Gill will captain the ODI side, while Shreyas Iyer will lead the T20I team. Gautam Gambhir will oversee the ODI side, while VVS Laxman will serve as head coach of India’s men’s team at the Asian Games in Japan.

According to a Dainik Jagran report, Gambhir and captain Gill reportedly wanted all-rounder Washington Sundar to be available for the ODI series against the West Indies. The report says Sundar’s off-spin was considered useful against the West Indies, who have several left-handed batters. However, Laxman was reportedly keen on retaining Sundar in the Asian Games squad as India prepares for its campaign in Japan. Sundar has ultimately remained in the Asian Games squad and is also part of India’s T20I squad for the West Indies series. There has been no official BCCI confirmation of any disagreement between Gambhir, Gill and Laxman.
