The Supreme Court has issued notices to the Centre and the Election Commission of India on a petition seeking equal constitutional protection for the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and other Election Commissioners. The petition challenges the provisions under Article 324(5) of the Constitution, raising concerns over transparency and fairness in the appointment and removal processes of election commissioners.
The petitioner has argued that other Election Commissioners should enjoy the same level of protection against removal as the Chief Election Commissioner. The plea also stresses the need for uniform rules to prevent discrimination in the removal process. The Supreme Court has sought responses from the Central Government and the Election Commission on the matter.
