Argentina football legend Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football. Following the 2026 World Cup final, Messi confirmed on August 31 through an emotional Instagram post that he would no longer represent the Argentina national team. The 39-year-old made his international debut in 2005 and finished with 207 appearances and 125 goals. He will, however, continue playing club football for Inter Miami, where his contract runs through 2028.
With his international career now over, attention has also turned to Messi’s enormous wealth. Forbes estimates his net worth at $1.1 billion. He ranked third on Forbes’ 2026 list of the world’s highest-paid athletes with estimated earnings of $140 million, including about $70 million from on-field income and another $70 million from endorsements and business ventures. Sponsored Instagram posts are also estimated to earn him around $2.7 million per post, although social-media income estimates can vary.
