The new format announced for the 2027 ODI World Cup has drawn criticism from several international cricket figures. Associate nation captains and players have expressed concerns that the revised structure could reduce opportunities for smaller teams. Through the World Cricketers’ Association, players stated that the decision goes against the goal of expanding global cricket. Under the new format, the three lowest-ranked qualified teams will compete in a preliminary Super Series, with only the winner advancing to the main World Cup featuring 12 teams.
Netherlands captain Scott Edwards, Namibia skipper Gerhard Erasmus, Ireland captain Paul Stirling, and Scotland captain Richie Berrington criticized the changes and stressed the importance of providing more opportunities to developing cricket nations. They said global tournaments play a crucial role in the growth of cricket in associate countries and urged the ICC to consider players’ views while making major decisions.
