As expected, Bangladesh has decided not to travel to India for next month’s T20 World Cup, citing serious security concerns. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has formally requested the International Cricket Council (ICC) to shift its matches to another country, preferably Sri Lanka.
This decision comes amid ongoing diplomatic tensions between India and Bangladesh. Adding to the controversy, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) instructed IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders to release Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman. A day after this move, the BCB announced that the national team would not tour India for the World Cup.
In an official statement, the BCB said it reviewed recent developments and, based on government advice, decided against sending the team to India due to rising security concerns. A senior board official questioned how India could ensure the safety of an entire team if it could not guarantee security for a single player.
The BCB has also sought clarification from the BCCI on why Mustafizur was released after being made available for the IPL auction. Meanwhile, shifting the matches at such short notice poses major logistical challenges, with schedules, travel, accommodation, and broadcast arrangements already finalized. The BCCI has not yet issued an official response.
