Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy stated that the Indian National Congress was the party that originally introduced women’s reservation, and questioned why it has not been implemented over the past decade. He criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party for allegedly creating confusion by linking women’s reservation with delimitation, while also accusing the opposition of non-cooperation. Revanth Reddy emphasized that Congress has historically empowered women by granting equal voting rights and appointing them to key constitutional positions such as President, Prime Minister, Governors, and Chief Ministers.
He further expressed concern over the proposed delimitation process, warning that population-based seat allocation would disadvantage southern states that have effectively implemented family planning. He cautioned that such measures could widen the gap between northern and southern regions, potentially marginalizing southern states politically. Proposing a hybrid model, he suggested that out of 272 additional seats, 136 should be allocated on a pro-rata basis and the remaining based on Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP). He urged the central government led by Narendra Modi to form an all-party committee, consult state assemblies, and involve experts before proceeding with delimitation.
