Tamil Nadu politics, which revolved around two dominant Dravidian parties for decades, has entered a new phase with TVK chief Vijay emerging as a powerful force. Riding on massive public support, Vijay steered his party close to power in the latest Assembly elections and disrupted the traditional dominance of the DMK and AIADMK. However, despite the remarkable performance, TVK fell short of the majority mark, making alliance support essential for government formation. Political observers are comparing Vijay’s rise to the biblical story of David defeating Goliath, as he challenged seasoned leaders like M. K. Stalin and Edappadi K. Palaniswami against all odds.
Though TVK secured an impressive mandate, the real challenge begins now. Vijay must navigate coalition politics, manage alliance pressures, and fulfill a long list of ambitious welfare promises, including financial aid for women, free LPG cylinders, gold for brides, and educational support for children. Analysts estimate that implementing these schemes could cost lakhs of crores over the next five years, at a time when Tamil Nadu is already burdened with massive debt. Meanwhile, internal discussions within AIADMK about extending support to Vijay have sparked fresh political excitement. If such support materializes, it could not only strengthen Vijay’s government but also reshape anti-DMK politics in the state. Still, uncertainty continues as senior AIADMK leaders publicly deny any immediate alliance plans.
