The Telangana government has intensified its legal efforts to stop the Polavaram–Nallamala Sagar expansion project proposed by Andhra Pradesh on the Godavari river. In preparation for the Supreme Court hearing, the state held detailed discussions with senior legal experts to ensure strong arguments are presented.
The writ petition filed by Telangana will come up for hearing in the Supreme Court on Monday. Ahead of this, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy, and senior Supreme Court advocate Abhishek Singhvi met in Mumbai to review the legal strategy. The Chief Minister instructed legal experts to present firm arguments and asked irrigation officials to keep all necessary documents and technical data ready.
In its petition, Telangana has sought an immediate stay on the expansion works being carried out by Andhra Pradesh to link Polavaram with Banakacherla or Nallamala Sagar without proper approvals. The state argued that the project should strictly adhere to the originally approved design and that any expansion is unlawful.
Telangana also objected to the Centre examining pre-feasibility reports for the Nallamala Sagar project without considering the state’s objections. It requested clear directions to the Central Water Commission, the Ministry of Jal Shakti, and the Godavari River Management Board. The petition further urged the court to halt DPR preparation, deny environmental clearances, and prevent any central financial assistance to the disputed expansion projects.
