The Supreme Court of India has deferred the hearing in the party defection case by two weeks, stating that it will review the progress at the next hearing. Appearing for the government, senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi informed the court that delays occurred due to Assembly sessions and changes in Assembly secretariat officials. He added that inquiries were conducted against those facing defection allegations and that the Speaker had already taken decisions on several complaints, seeking an extension of four to six weeks.
Arguing for the petitioners, senior advocate Seshadri Naidu contended that the Speaker was deliberately delaying decisions, despite an earlier direction from the CJI bench to conclude matters within three months. He pointed out that certain petitions - relating to MLAs elected on one party ticket contesting or campaigning for another party - remain pending without even calling for counters. After hearing both sides, the bench declined to grant a longer extension and limited the adjournment strictly to two weeks.
