In the first year of Donald Trump's presidency, a record number of visa cancellations were recorded in the United States. The State Department announced that the US government cancelled a total of one lakh visas during this period. It revealed that this included 8,000 student visas and 2,500 special visas. The government stated that it is cancelling the visas of those who clashed with US security forces and those who committed legal violations, and sending them back to their home countries.
Officials cited four main reasons for the visa cancellations. These include overstaying in the US, driving under the influence of alcohol, engaging in assaults, and committing crimes such as theft. Officials stated that the number of visa cancellations has increased by more than 150 percent compared to 2024. The State Department also clarified that it is currently conducting social media vetting on all visa applications.
