Warangal MP Dr. Kadiyam Kavya has urged that Dalit Christians be granted Scheduled Caste (SC) status by removing Paragraph 3 of the Scheduled Castes Order, 1950. She stated that she has appealed to the Justice K.G. Balakrishnan Commission to consider the demand positively. Kavya recalled that several commissions, including the Kaka Kalelkar Commission (1955), the High-Powered Panel on Minorities, SCs and STs (1983), and the Justice Ranganath Misra Commission (2007), had already recommended SC status for Dalit Christians. She requested the current commission to take these reports into account and recommend appropriate action.
She emphasized that conversion to another religion does not eliminate social discrimination faced by Dalit communities. Therefore, granting SC status to Dalit Christians would align with constitutional principles of equality and social justice. Kavya stressed that the move would help ensure equal rights and protection for marginalized communities, irrespective of religion.
