Prime Minister Narendra Modi has achieved a rare milestone in his political career. Including his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat, he has completed 8,931 consecutive days as head of government, becoming the longest-serving leader in this role in India. This record was previously held by former Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling, who served for 8,930 days. Modi has now surpassed that mark.
Modi assumed office as Gujarat Chief Minister in 2001 and continued until 2014, after which he became Prime Minister. Since then, he has been serving continuously without interruption. He also holds the record as the longest-serving Chief Minister of Gujarat and is the Prime Minister with the most prior experience as a Chief Minister.
Modi is the first non-Congress leader born after independence to serve as Prime Minister for such a long duration. He has completed two full terms at the Centre and is currently serving a third term, setting another record among non-Congress leaders. Leading his party to victories in the 2014, 2019, and 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Modi has matched Jawaharlal Nehru’s record of winning three consecutive general elections. Last July, he surpassed former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to become the second-longest-serving Prime Minister in continuous terms.
Additionally, Modi has won six consecutive elections as a party leader Gujarat Assembly elections in 2002, 2007, 2012, and General Elections in 2014, 2019, and 2024 making him the only leader to achieve this feat.
