A crucial political development unfolded ahead of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay’s trust vote in the Assembly. The Madras High Court issued interim orders restraining TVK MLA Srinivasa Sethupathi from participating in the confidence vote. The MLA had won the Tiruppattur constituency in Sivaganga district by a margin of just one vote against DMK leader and former minister Periya Karuppan in the recent Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
Periya Karuppan approached the Madras High Court alleging irregularities in the counting process and errors in postal ballot counting. He sought a recount of votes and requested the court to prevent Srinivasa Sethupathi from functioning as an MLA until the matter is resolved. Following the court’s interim order, Vijay’s effective strength in the 234-member Assembly may reduce from 120 to 119. However, Vijay still requires the support of 118 MLAs to comfortably pass the trust vote, while several AIADMK legislators have reportedly extended support to him.
