The Lok Sabha has approved an extension of the tenure of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) examining the 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill. The extension provides the committee with additional time to continue its review and submit a comprehensive report on the proposed legislation.
The proposed Bill is reported to include provisions that would require the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, and Union and State Ministers to vacate office if they remain in jail for more than 30 days. With the latest extension of the JPC's tenure, parliamentary experts believe the Bill is unlikely to be introduced for consideration during the current session of Parliament.
