A leaked diplomatic document has reportedly revealed allegations of American involvement in the removal of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan from office. Investigative publication Drop Site released what it claims to be the original confidential communication related to the political developments of April 2022. According to the report, before the no-confidence motion against Imran Khan was introduced in Pakistan’s National Assembly, Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States, Asad Majeed Khan, met US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Donald Lu. During the meeting, discussions allegedly took place regarding Imran Khan’s removal and imprisonment, with claims that Pakistan-US relations would improve afterward.
Following Imran Khan’s removal, Shehbaz Sharif assumed office as Prime Minister of Pakistan. The leaked communication reportedly suggested that Imran Khan’s neutral stance on the Russia-Ukraine war played a major role in Washington’s dissatisfaction with his government. Prior to the diplomatic meeting, Imran Khan had addressed a massive rally in Pakistan, accusing the United States of conspiring with local political forces to oust him from power. However, both the Pakistani government and the United States denied the allegations. Imran Khan was later sentenced in the Toshakhana case and has remained in prison since then.
