Iran has taken a key decision by announcing on Saturday that it has once again closed the Strait of Hormuz. The country stated that strict restrictions over the strategic waterway will remain in place until the United States lifts sanctions and allows free movement of its vessels. Iran claimed that the decision was taken in response to what it described as a violation of agreements by the United States. The situation changed within hours after Iran had recently announced the reopening of the Strait in the context of the Lebanon–Israel ceasefire agreement, calling it a move of protest against Washington’s stance.
According to Iran’s Joint Military Command (Khatam al-Anbiya), restrictions have now been reinstated in the Strait of Hormuz region. It further stated that Iranian military forces will maintain full control over the Strait and surrounding areas. Iran accused the United States of violating the ceasefire agreement by continuing what it called a blockade of its ports. The country also made it clear that restrictions on the Strait of Hormuz will continue as long as the U.S. maintains its blockade.
