West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee is facing a major political setback following the party’s poor performance in the recent Assembly elections. In a significant development, nearly 100 councillors have reportedly resigned collectively, triggering serious concerns within the party. Political observers believe this is one of the biggest crises faced by the TMC since Mamata Banerjee founded the party in 1998 after breaking away from Congress.
The internal unrest within the party appears to be intensifying, with reports suggesting that several senior leaders and public representatives may shift towards the BJP. Speculation has also grown after TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar resigned from her post as Barasat district president and attended an official meeting chaired by West Bengal BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari along with two TMC MLAs. Analysts say the growing rebellion within municipal bodies and declining participation of party legislators in protests indicate a widening leadership crisis for Mamata Banerjee ahead of the upcoming municipal elections.
