Women-centric unconditional cash transfer (UCT) schemes are putting increasing pressure on state economies, according to a new report by PRS Legislative Research. What started three years ago in just two states has now expanded to 12 states across India. In the current financial year, these states together have allocated ₹1.68 lakh crore (₹1.68 trillion) for such women-focused welfare programs.
The report revealed that six of these states are already facing revenue deficits. Experts warn that as spending on UCT schemes continues to rise, even surplus-budget states are slipping into fiscal deficits. The study concludes that the growing financial burden of such welfare programs could have long-term implications for state economies.
