Raghunandan Rao Makes Key Remarks on Increasing the Number of Judges

Medak MP Raghunandan Rao welcomed the passage of the Supreme Court (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which increases the number of Supreme Court judges from 34 to 38, including the Chief Justice of India. He said the move aims to speed up the disposal of pending cases, noting that nearly one lakh cases are currently pending before the apex court.

Raghunandan Rao stated that while around 65,000 cases are disposed of annually, nearly 75,000 new cases are filed every year, making an increase in judicial strength necessary. He added that the Centre has spent around ₹7,000 crore to improve access to justice and suggested that greater transparency in the collegium system through a Judicial Commission would be beneficial. He also said the government would soon clarify misconceptions surrounding E20 fuel.
