OTT platforms have become a major part of India’s entertainment landscape, allowing viewers to watch movies, web series, TV shows and other digital content directly through the internet. Unlike traditional cable or satellite services, OTT gives users the flexibility to access content on smartphones, smart TVs and other connected devices whenever they want.
According to the latest Ormax Media report cited in the supplied information, India’s online video audience has reached 664.9 million, which is around 45% of the country’s population. The number stood at 601.2 million last year, indicating an 11% year-on-year increase.
Paid OTT subscriptions have also recorded significant growth. Active paid subscriptions reached 172.6 million, compared with 148.2 million in the previous year, marking a 16% increase. The numbers indicate that more viewers are not only consuming online content but are also willing to pay for streaming services.
One of the biggest trends highlighted by the report is the rapid growth of OTT viewing on connected televisions. The number of connected TV users reached 206.9 million, registering a 60% increase in a year. This suggests that OTT viewing is increasingly moving beyond individual mobile screens, with more families choosing to watch digital content together on television.
The average viewer is also spending considerable time watching online video content, with weekly consumption reportedly reaching 14.9 hours per person. Along with mainstream OTT platforms, social media videos, short-form content, micro-dramas and fast channels are also attracting growing audiences.
Overall, the data highlights a major shift in India’s entertainment habits. Smartphones and smart TVs are emerging as the two key screens driving the country’s rapidly expanding digital video ecosystem.
