In recent times, OTT platforms have increasingly influenced the release schedules of films. The same situation reportedly arose with Irumudi. As Toxic was scheduled to hit theatres on August 26, the producers, Mytri Movie Makers, reportedly considered postponing Irumudi by a week to avoid direct competition.
However, Netflix, which acquired the film’s digital rights, reportedly did not agree to the postponement. As per the agreement, the streaming platform insisted that Irumudi should be released in theatres on August 21. With no other option, the makers went ahead with the original release date.
Interestingly, what initially appeared to be a difficult situation turned into a major advantage for Irumudi. The film went on to achieve strong success at the box office, while Toxic reportedly failed to meet expectations. This has sparked discussion over whether the original release date ultimately played a crucial role in Irumudi’s success.
With the film continuing its successful theatrical run, reports suggest that Irumudi is likely to stream on Netflix as a Vinayaka Chavithi special. However, an official OTT streaming date is yet to be announced.
