The Hayli Gubbi volcano in Ethiopia has erupted for the first time in nearly 10,000 years, sending massive clouds of ash and smoke high into the sky. The ash plume has risen several thousand meters, forcing adjustments to regional air traffic.
A flight from Kannur, Kerala, to Abu Dhabi was diverted to Ahmedabad due to the ash cloud threat. Reports indicate that the volcanic ash may drift toward northern parts of India, raising concerns for airlines operating in that airspace.
Aviation authorities and airline companies are closely monitoring the situation. Akasa Air issued a statement assuring passengers that their safety is the highest priority and that all necessary precautions are being implemented.
The volcano is located in the remote Afar region of Ethiopia. Scientists described this sudden eruption as one of the rarest events in the region’s history. Due to the sparse population, details about property or casualty impact remain unclear. Ash and smoke have already spread across the Red Sea towards Oman and Yemen, prompting alerts in those countries as well.
