A major geopolitical controversy has erupted after a United States nuclear submarine reportedly torpedoed and sank the Iranian warship ‘Dena’ in international waters near Sri Lanka. The warship was returning to Iran after participating in a multinational naval exercise held off the coast of Visakhapatnam in India. The attack, which allegedly took place on March 4, resulted in the deaths of more than 80 Iranian sailors and has triggered global debate over humanitarian concerns, international maritime laws, and escalating military tensions in the region.
The incident has also placed India in a delicate diplomatic position. The Iranian vessel had visited India as part of an international naval exercise involving around 70 countries. Analysts believe the attack signals that the Indian Ocean is increasingly becoming a strategic theatre for global power rivalry. India has maintained that it offered assistance to Iranian vessels purely on humanitarian grounds, providing shelter to another Iranian ship, Lavan, at Kochi port. Officials emphasized that once a foreign warship leaves Indian waters, India bears no responsibility for its security in international waters, while also calling for restraint and diplomatic dialogue amid rising regional tensions.
