The United States government has started accepting applications for tax refunds collected from companies under emergency laws. This move comes after the Supreme Court ruled that the import duties imposed by the Trump administration were unconstitutional. Following the judgment, the government has launched a special online portal where importers can apply for refunds starting from Monday at 8:00 AM local time.
According to the guidelines, companies must submit details of the products on which they paid import duties while applying online. Once the application is submitted, the refund amount will be processed and released within 60 to 90 days. However, officials have mentioned that there may be delays in some cases depending on verification and other factors.
Reports suggest that around 3.3 lakh importers had paid nearly 166 billion dollars as import duties on about 53 million shipments. The government is now planning to return this amount in phases. This decision is expected to provide major financial relief to companies affected by the earlier policy.
