In the realm of Andhra Pradesh politics, the "MAVIGAN" (Machilipatnam–Vijayawada–Guntur) concept has emerged as a subject of intense discussion, representing Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy's latest strategic maneuver. While Jagan had initially expressed support for Amaravati prior to the 2019 elections, he subsequently proposed a "three capitals" model, designating Visakhapatnam as the primary executive capital. However, his current pivot toward the MAVIGAN concept has become a politically intriguing development. According to party insiders, this decision appears to have been taken not after extensive internal deliberations, but rather by Jagan and his inner circle.
The "three capitals" plan failed to progress due to various hurdles, including legal challenges pending in the courts and resistance encountered within the Legislative Council. Against this backdrop, it appears that Jagan believes the MAVIGAN model could serve as a means to circumvent these legal impediments. This strategy seems designed to utilize the government buildings already under construction in Amaravati while simultaneously declaring an expansion of the capital's geographical scope.
Political analysts suggest that, anticipating the possibility of N. Chandrababu Naidu completing the ongoing development works in Amaravati, Jagan intends to project the MAVIGAN region as the de facto capital should he return to power in the future. However, observers note that this entire strategy rests solely on political speculation, and its ultimate form will likely be determined by the evolving political landscape in the days to come.
