Yashwant Varma resigned from his position as a judge of the Allahabad High Court on Friday. He submitted his resignation letter to the President of India, Droupadi Murmu. The decision comes in the wake of a major controversy that erupted last year after bundles of cash were reportedly discovered at his residence in Delhi during a fire incident.
The incident had triggered widespread outrage across the country. An internal inquiry conducted by the Supreme Court of India reportedly found the allegations against Justice Varma to be true. Amid the controversy, he had earlier been transferred from Delhi to the Allahabad High Court. With impeachment proceedings likely to begin in Parliament, his sudden resignation has sparked intense debate within the judicial system.
