The Supreme Court has permitted 31-year-old Harish Rana, who has been in a coma for the past 13 years, to peacefully pass away. This marks the first time in India’s history that the court has granted permission for mercy death in such circumstances. The landmark ruling has sparked widespread discussion across the medical and legal communities in the country.
In 2013, Harish Rana, a student of Punjab University, suffered severe injuries after accidentally falling from the fourth floor of a paying guest house where he was staying. Since the incident, he has been on life support. He has remained bedridden with the help of a tracheostomy tube for breathing and a gastrojejunostomy tube for nutrition. Despite the challenging circumstances, Harish Rana’s parents have been selflessly caring for their son for the past 13 years.
However, as there had been no improvement in his health condition during this long period, his parents approached the court seeking permission for their son to be allowed to die peacefully. After a prolonged hearing, the Supreme Court delivered its historic verdict, stating that when there is no possibility of recovery, it is not necessary to continue medical treatment indefinitely.
