The FDA has ordered the recall of 2.6 lakh cases of shredded cheese sold in 31 states and Puerto Rico in the US. It has warned that the cheese may contain metal particles. The products, made by Great Lakes Cheese Company, are sold under private brands at major retailers such as Target, Walmart and Aldi. The recall includes several types of cheese, including mozzarella, Italian style, pizza blend, mozzarella-provolone and mozzarella-parmesan.
The FDA has classified the recall as a Class-II recall. This means that these products may cause temporary or treatable health problems, but the risk of serious problems is low. However, the FDA has warned that if the cheese contains metal particles, it could cause tooth loss, cuts in the mouth or throat, or injuries to the lower intestines. It advised consumers to check the cheese they have and not use the recalled products.
