Egg prices have increased dramatically, reaching unprecedented levels. Eggs, a common source of protein for ordinary people, have now become unaffordable. An egg that once cost Rs. 5-6 in the retail market is now priced at Rs. 8. The fact that a single egg costs over Rs. 7.30 even in the wholesale market shows the severity of this price hike.
A few days ago, a tray of 30 eggs cost Rs. 160-170, but now it has skyrocketed to Rs. 210-220 in the wholesale market. Country chicken eggs are being sold for Rs. 15 each. The poultry industry says that the main reason is insufficient production to meet the demand. The increase in the prices of raw materials like feed, maize, and fishmeal has forced many poultry farmers to close their farms, further exacerbating the situation.
The Telugu states used to produce approximately 8 crore eggs daily. However, production has decreased significantly recently. "Rs. 7.30 in wholesale and Rs. 8 in retail—this is the highest price in the history of the poultry industry. This situation is likely to continue for another two months," say traders. Experts suggest that prices are unlikely to decrease until production returns to normal levels.
