The Telangana government has set an ambitious target of building a $3-trillion economy by 2047, with the life sciences sector identified as a central growth driver, IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu said on Wednesday. Addressing the valedictory session of BioAsia 2026 at HITEX, Mr. Sridhar Babu said the “Telangana Rising 2047” initiative was conceived with inputs from citizens and domain experts to increase the State’s contribution to national GDP to 10%. Earlier, participating in a fireside chat titled “Telangana Rising 2047: Building a World-Class Life Sciences Ecosystem,” the Minister outlined the State’s long-term roadmap to position Telangana as a global life sciences hub.
He said the sector would play a pivotal role in achieving the economic target. Since December 2023, Telangana has attracted investments worth ₹73,360 crore in life sciences, generating nearly one lakh jobs. Outlining the government’s strategy to strengthen the ecosystem, he referred to the Telangana Next-Gen Life Sciences Policy (2026–2030), establishment of the Telangana Life Sciences School and the OneBio Incubator, expansion of Genome Valley, development of Pharma Villages, and creation of world-class infrastructure backed by global partnerships and skilled talent. Highlighting the State’s industrial base, he said Telangana is home to over 2,000 life sciences companies.
The State accounts for nearly one-third of India’s pharmaceutical production and about one-fifth of the country’s pharma exports. Mr. Sridhar Babu said several global companies, including Sanofi, Opella, Vaxxinova Animal Health, Tredence and Rx Propellant, had expressed interest in investing in Telangana during the summit. Special roundtable meetings were held with experts from the United Kingdom, New Zealand, South Korea, Australia and Japan to deliberate on emerging challenges and collaboration opportunities.
Discussions were also held with the World Economic Forum on positioning India as the world’s third-largest bioeconomy, with Telangana playing a significant role. A detailed roadmap is under preparation. BioAsia 2026 witnessed participation from 4,394 delegates from India and abroad, including representatives of Fortune 500 companies. The summit hosted over 4,000 high-level business-to-business meetings aimed at fostering investments and partnerships. Emphasising that the government views life sciences not merely as a commercial sector but as a domain with significant social impact, the Minister invited industry leaders to partner with Telangana in advancing innovation-led growth.
