

On November 24, Justice Surya Kant officially assumed the position of India’s 53rd Chief Justice. He will hold this esteemed role until February 9, 2027, succeeding Justice Bhushan R. Gavai. Given his extensive experience and contributions over the previous forty years, his appointment signifies the start of an important phase in the Indian judiciary.
Justice Surya Kant, who was born in Petwar village in Hisar, Haryana, on February 10, 1962, started practicing law in 1984 after graduating from Maharishi Dayanand University in Rohtak. He began practicing in the Hisar District Courts before relocating to the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 1985, where he focused on civil, service, and constitutional cases. He made history in 2000 when he was appointed Senior Advocate and became the youngest Advocate General of Haryana.
In 2004, Justice Surya Kant was promoted to the position of Punjab and Haryana High Court judge. In 2018, he was appointed Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court. Since joining the Supreme Court in May 2019, he has held important roles, such as Executive Chairman of NALSA. His appointment as Chief Justice of India is a significant turning point that reflects his commitment, academic prowess, and significant contributions to the Indian legal system.
