The central government has clarified reports suggesting that the weight of LPG cylinders could be reduced from 14.2 kg to 10 kg. Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum, Sujata Sharma, stated that such claims are purely speculative. Recent news had suggested that fuel companies were considering reducing cylinder weight to manage the shortage of cooking gas caused by rising tensions in West Asia. Some media outlets also reported that plans were being made to supply 10 kg LPG cylinders for household use.
Currently, 14.2 kg cylinders are being distributed to households. Media reports speculated that companies were exploring options to fill 10 kg LPG in existing cylinders to ensure uninterrupted supply during the crisis. Normally, a 14.2 kg cylinder lasts 35-40 days for an average household, while a 10 kg cylinder would last around a month. However, the government has firmly denied any such plans and emphasized that no changes to cylinder weight are being implemented.
