Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma inaugurated the country’s first-ever “GI on Wheels” initiative at the MGBS Bus Station in Hyderabad, describing the programme as a commendable step toward promoting India’s cultural identity and heritage. The Governor stated that Geographical Indication (GI) represents the nation’s history, identity, and traditions, and appreciated Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar for immediately responding to the idea when it was first proposed. He emphasized that society is rooted in culture rather than confined to phones or the internet, and such initiatives help reconnect people with their heritage.
The specially designed TGSRTC buses feature GI-tagged cultural and artistic works representing Telangana’s traditional crafts and heritage. The Governor flagged off six express buses showcasing six unique GI art forms from different districts, aimed at creating widespread awareness about GI tags while encouraging tourism and supporting artisans. The event was attended by Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, RTC Managing Director Nagi Reddy, Hyderabad District Collector Dasari Harichandana, and senior RTC officials.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said the initiative was launched in line with the Governor’s vision to enhance the prominence of Telangana’s cultural traditions. The buses display iconic GI products including Pochampally Ikat, Warangal Carpets, Karimnagar Silver Filigree, Narayanpet Sarees, Cheriyal Scroll Paintings, and Nirmal Paintings. He noted that “GI on Wheels” is not merely decorative but a moving cultural platform that will generate awareness, boost tourism, create employment opportunities for artisans, and enhance the state’s prestige while offering passengers a unique cultural experience during travel.
